Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis
Regional Medical Center of San Jose provides dialysis services to patients admitted to the hospital with acute or chronic renal failure.
- Acute renal failure—Has an abrupt onset and is potentially reversible.
- Chronic renal failure—Progresses slowly over a few months and can lead to permanent kidney damage. Diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure) are the two main causes of chronic renal failure.
- Renal failure or end stage renal disease (ESRD)—Refers to temporary or permanent damage to the kidneys resulting in the loss of normal kidney function.
Hemodialysis
During hemodialysis, highly technical machines replace the function of the kidneys. Our hospital has 11 hemodialysis machines that filter toxins, waste and other fluids from the blood.
Peritoneal dialysis
As an alternative to hemodialysis, we also offer peritoneal dialysis. This filters toxins, waste and fluid through the peritoneum (the tissue that lines the abdomen and surrounds the abdominal organs). Peritoneal dialysis gives you greater flexibility than hemodialysis since it can be done at home or work.
