Regional Medical Center updates trauma center, stroke & heart attack programs to continue caring for east San Jose

San Jose, CA – Regional Medical Center today announced revisions to previously planned service changes to align with community healthcare needs. Modifications will be made to Regional’s trauma, heart attack and stroke programs rather than the previously announced closures.

These modifications underscore Regional Medical Center’s continued commitment to providing a comprehensive range of healthcare services for San Jose’s East Side, including more than 20 specialties onsite. The hospital is dedicated to delivering high-quality healthcare now and into the future with the following updated services:

  • Trauma Center: Reinstating as a Level III facility in accordance with state regulations that provides prompt assessment, resuscitation, surgery, intensive care and stabilization of injured patients and emergency operations.
  • Heart attacks: Revamping the acute heart attack program to feature around-the-clock cardiologist availability and a daytime catheterization laboratory.
  • Strokes: Operating as a stroke center with enhanced interventional capabilities to address the needs of 97% of stroke patients, with the remaining cases managed and transferred to acute care providers for appropriate level of care as previously done.
  • Emergency Department Expansion: Proceeding with plans to increase Emergency Department capacity from 43 to 63 beds by 2025.

“We worked closely with our emergency services partners to ensure we will meet the evolving medical needs of our patients and the East San Jose Community,” said Matt Cova, CEO of Regional Medical Center. “We’re pleased to have found a path that supports the revisions we’re announcing today.”

This decision, made after extensive coordination with local agencies, internal discussions, community outreach and analysis of the county's impact report of the initial changes, aims to address community concerns and ensure quality healthcare , resulting in today's revised critical care services.

“The doctors and nurses at Regional Medical Center are integral and substantive members of our region’s healthcare system,” said Dr. Priya Kumarvelu, incoming president of Regional’s medical staff. “Their dedication to provide extraordinary care, particularly with these updates to our critical care services, ensures the well-being of our patients and community.”

The implementation of these revised services is scheduled for Aug. 12, 2024.
