San Jose, CA- March 3, 2011 - Nearly 200 people attended the official groundbreaking ceremony today for Regional Medical Center’s new 4-story hospital tower, scheduled to be completed by early 2014. The ceremony, hosted by RMC CEO Mike Johnson was attended by San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed, District 5 City Councilman Xavier Campos and other elected city, county and state officials, physicians, staff and community members.

" This is an exciting day for Regional Medical Center and parent company HCA (Hospital Corp. of America)," said Johnson. "RMC is undergoing a $300 million dollar expansion project, which includes the new tower, 2 story wing, expanded and renovated ER, and new Breast Care Center. When it’s complete, it will largely serve as RMC’s replacement hospital."

An enthusiastic San Jose Mayor, Chuck Reed reminded the crowd that RMC serves one-half of the San Jose population and said he received great care during a recent visit to RMC’s emergency room. He also noted and thanked HCA for the multi-million dollar investment, which will not only provide 2-thousand construction jobs, but will directly benefit the entire community. "With construction unemployment at 30%, this is a big deal, a big investment," he said. "Thank you and congratulations to the entire staff for the high quality medical services you provide here."

District 5 City Councilmember, Xavier Campos also spoke and observed that while other companies were cutting back, RMC continues to expand. "In the last decade RMC has reinvented itself from a small community hospital to a full service medical center," he said. “We need to get people back to work and this hospital is providing permanent jobs in the community."

The Mayor, City Council members including District 8 Councilmember Rose Herrera and other elected officials joined members of the RMC e-Team, Board of Trustee and others to put shovels to dirt as the official start of construction.

The 4-story tower will add 81 private beds and is scheduled to be complete Q1 2014.

As part of the expansion project, it will largely serve as the RMC replacement hospital.
